Coming Face-to-Face with Toxic Ingredients-Part 3

Three Generations of women smiling introducing Face to Face Friday- Part 3

Welcome back to Face-to-Face Friday. We are here to educate you and raise awareness to the dangerous ingredients found in many skin care and cosmetic products.

Today’s article is Coming Face-to-Face with Toxic Ingredients-Part 3. This is the final article in our 3-part series on toxic ingredients. We hope this information has been helpful and spurred your interest to take a closer look at the products you're using and learn more about the many other ingredients that are regularly put in personal care products which can possibly harm you. My Alchemy Skin Care is proud to stand for “clean beauty” which for us means we will NEVER use any unsafe ingredients in our products.

As promised, here’s 4 more villains to be on the lookout for:

#1  Dimethicone Is a synthetic silicone polymer that adds smoothness to skin. Dimethicone can block your skin’s pores locking in toxins that can fester and cause breakouts like acne. Keep your eyes peeled for products that contain dimethicone including anti-aging skin creams, face moisturizers, makeup, lotion, acne creams, and hair products.

#2 Petroleum-based Ingredients include petroleum jelly, mineral oil, paraffin wax, toluene, benzene, fragrance, petrolatum, butanol or butyl. These petro chemicals can be found in skin, beauty and cosmetic products. Unfortunately, unrefined petroleum-based lubricants can contain carcinogenic contaminants called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. You may notice skin breakouts, acne and irritation which is the very least of the problems they can cause compared to possibly cancer or damage to your reproductive system. Instead of reaching for products with these ingredients, your alternative is to go with natural plant-based butters like shea which is well-known as an effective moisturizer.

#3 Coal Tar is made from hydrocarbons, carbon and water. According to the American Cancer Society, coal tar is a known carcinogen. What color would you guess coal tar is? If you said black, thinking of liquid tar, guess again. Coal tar is used to actually brighten the color of lip sticks and eye-shadows. Besides cosmetics, it is an active ingredient in dandruff shampoo, anti-itch creams, hair dyes and synthetic colors. It can have a toxic effect on the skin causing allergic reactions and skin breakouts. It’s best to stay far away from this heavy and toxic pollutant labeled as FD&C, Chemical colors Blue 1 and Green 3, and D&C. It’s best to use natural pigments from plant derivatives that are pure colorants

#4. Phenoxyethanol (fen-oxy-etha-nol). This chemical compound has been touted as a friendly preservative-alternative to parabens. It is popular in cosmetics, face lotions and cleansers. It’s also used in some fragrance, in which case it won’t be listed on the label. You may see it as 2-phenoxy and ethanol, 2-hydroxyethyl phenyl ether. Phenoxyethanol has been shown to be a skin and eye irritant and produce reproductive and development toxicity. FDA warnings say “it can depress the central nervous system and may cause vomiting and diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration in infants.” (http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/SafetyInformation/SafetyAlertsforHumanMedicalProducts/ucm092727.hym.)

Winding up….

There are so many diseases like cancer and even mystery illnesses out there we hope you’ll never encounter. Have you ever considered that with all the chemicals you feed your body through our skin, if it could be possible that some sickness might be attributed to toxins you apply to our skin? The reality is that the chemicals we’ve highlighted in our 3-part series, Face-to-Face with Toxic Ingredients, can and do enter your bloodstream and organs. Why risk the consequences?

We recommend the best way to be safe and well is to remove any questionable toxins from your diet, beauty regime. Skin care is a good place to start. While none of us can be in total control of everything that could harm us like airborne and environmental toxins for instance, you can be in control of everything that’s within your control. Why not choose clean beauty products provided by a company you can trust like My Alchemy Skin Care? We promise only the finest quality, ethically-sourced wildcrafted and organic botanicals will be used in our formulas. You can count on us for products that are clean that really work.
