Tea Tree Oil Gets an A for Aromatics and Potent Antiseptic Properties

Tea Tree Essential Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)

Tea Tree Oil is probably one of the more well-known and popular essential oils. You may find it labeled as Melaleuca Oil.  It can be found in a wide range of products from skin care, face washes, massage oils, deodorant, shampoo to household cleaning products. It is an ingredient selected for our Purifier PLUS Rejuvenating Hand Sanitizer and Conditioner. Tea Tree Oil is one of nature’s most potent antiseptics used to kill germs, fight infections and soothe skin irritation. We love its disinfecting power and pure, fresh, herbaceous, minty clean aroma it adds to Purifier PLUS.

Tea Tree Flower and plant.

Sourced out of Australia,Tea Tree Oil is steam distilled from the leaves of the Tea Tree, more like a shrub than a tree. Tea Tree leaves have been used for centuries by the aborigines to heal cuts, wounds and skin infections.

This oil is known for its strong, yet gentle to the skin, antimicrobial and antifungal properties. Dr. Axe shares the chemistry of this oil - “Tea tree’s primary active ingredients include terpene hydrocarbons,  monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. It is these compounds that give tea tree its antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal activity. There are actually over 100 different chemical components of tea tree oil — terpinen-4-ol and alpha-terpineol are the most active — and various ranges of concentrations. The volatile hydrocarbons found in the oil are considered aromatic and capable of traveling through air, pores of the skin and mucus membranes. That’s why tea tree oil is commonly used aromatically and topically to kill germs, fight infections and soothe skin conditions.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1360273/
